November 4: Candidates of the People’s Party and the CPI(M) formally filed their nomination papers for Wards 21 and 15 respectively on Wednesday ahead of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council elections.

At around 12.30 pm, People’s Party candidate Anjan Shuklabaidya submitted his nomination papers to Returning Officer Debjani Chowdhury for Ward 21. A rally was organised on the occasion, followed by the submission of a memorandum.

Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Shuklabaidya said the municipal elections were being held at a time when student and youth movements were gaining momentum across the country. Referring to the demand for cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, he claimed that opposition parties were jointly raising these demands. He also criticised the BJP-led alliance government, alleging that people across the country were facing growing hardships under its rule.

Shuklabaidya further said that, considering the overall political situation and the need to protect the basic rights of residents of Ward 21, the CPI(M) had extended its support to the People’s Party candidate and decided not to field its own nominee in the ward. He added that the Congress had also fielded a candidate, but discussions were underway with the party. He expressed hope that the Congress would eventually support the People’s Party candidate and withdraw its nominee.

The key demands of the People’s Party, he said, included the establishment of a Dharmanagar Railway Division, overall development of the town and improvement of the poor civic conditions in Ward 21.

Meanwhile, CPI(M)-nominated candidate Pampa Dasgupta filed her nomination papers for Ward 15 at the Returning Officer’s office at around 11 am on Wednesday.
