Consumers in Sonamura witnessed a major price relief as onions were sold at Rs 30 per kg through an initiative of the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Ltd. (NCCF). The comparatively low price attracted a large number of buyers, who gathered to purchase onions.
The NCCF is a national-level cooperative organisation functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It plays a role in ensuring the availability of essential commodities at affordable prices, particularly when market prices rise.
Under government initiatives, the organisation sells essential commodities such as onions, pulses, tomatoes and rice at subsidised or affordable rates through designated outlets and mobile vans. It also procures agricultural produce directly from farmers to facilitate its distribution among consumers.
In addition, the NCCF undertakes procurement of pulses and oilseeds on behalf of the government under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism. Such interventions are aimed at supporting farmers while providing relief to consumers from rising prices of essential commodities.
