Charilam:: A daring burglary at the house of a single mother in Ramakrishna Palli under Bishramganj has triggered concern among local residents. Taking advantage of the house being unoccupied, burglars allegedly broke into the premises late on Sunday night and escaped with Rs 20,000 in cash and gold earrings. The house owner, Shilpi Sarkar, was away at the time of the incident.
According to family sources, Shilpi lives with her son, who studies in Class X, and her daughter, a Class VII student. Her husband left the family when the children were very young. Since then, she has been earning a living by working as a cook in other people's homes to raise her two children. On Sunday, she had locked her house and gone to visit her brother in Charilam. The burglars allegedly took advantage of her absence to carry out the theft.
According to the complaint, the burglars used a *boti*, a traditional cutting implement, a machete and iron rods to break open the house door and enter the premises. They subsequently broke open a showcase and took away the cash and gold earrings. Shilpi was reportedly devastated upon returning home and discovering the theft. She said the incident had left her virtually destitute.
Police from Bishramganj Police Station reached the spot after receiving information and initiated an investigation. Shilpi suspects that two local youths may have been involved in the burglary and has reportedly shared her suspicion with the police. However, police said the allegations would be examined as part of the investigation. The involvement of the suspected individuals has not yet been established.
It may be recalled that another major burglary was reported a few days ago in the Silotiamura area under Bishramganj Police Station. Rajib Deb, a suspect in that case, is reportedly still in police custody. A series of theft incidents has heightened anxiety among residents of the Bishramganj area, with locals demanding effective measures to curb the recurring burglaries.
