Santirbazar, November 3: The CPI(M) has alleged that a conducive atmosphere for filing nomination papers is absent at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's (SDM) office in Santirbazar ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. Accusing the ruling BJP's motorcycle-borne supporters and party workers of creating an intimidating atmosphere, the opposition party claimed that candidates from opposition parties were facing difficulties in submitting their nomination papers.
Seeking a free and peaceful environment for the nomination process, a CPI(M) delegation met the District Election Officer-cum-District Magistrate of South Tripura on Tuesday and submitted a deputation demanding adequate security and necessary administrative intervention.
According to the CPI(M), the entire SDM office premises and adjoining areas have been occupied by BJP's motorcycle-borne supporters. The party alleged that nearly 100 BJP workers were present inside and around the office premises, preventing opposition candidates from filing their nomination papers in a normal and peaceful atmosphere. The allegations have raised questions over the transparency of the electoral process and the maintenance of democratic norms.
During the meeting, the delegation urged the District Election Officer to ensure that candidates of opposition parties could submit their nomination papers without obstruction, intimidation or fear. They also demanded adequate security arrangements at the SDM office and its surrounding areas to ensure a free and peaceful nomination process.
The delegation comprised CPI(M) South District Secretary Tapas Dutta, Santirbazar Sub-Divisional Secretary Ashutosh Debnath, CPI District Secretary Bikash De and MLA Ashok Mitra. The District Election Officer reportedly assured the delegation that necessary steps would be taken to address their concerns.
The allegations have triggered fresh concerns in political circles, with the municipal elections approaching. An impartial examination of the opposition's allegations and effective administrative intervention will be crucial to ensuring a free, fair, peaceful and inclusive electoral process in Santirbazar.
