Congress Candidates File Nominations in Three Wards for Sabroom Nagar Panchayat Polls

Political activity is gradually gathering momentum in Sabroom ahead of the upcoming Nagar Panchayat elections. On Wednesday, three candidates representing the Indian National Congress filed their nomination papers at the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Sabroom.

The three Congress candidates who submitted their nomination papers are Lakhan Das from Ward No. 1, Rinku Das from Ward No. 3 and Debashish Dey from Ward No. 8.

According to party sources, the Congress plans to field candidates in six more wards, with nomination papers expected to be submitted within the next two days. The latest move has triggered fresh political discussions in Sabroom as parties prepare for the upcoming civic polls.

Sabroom has traditionally been regarded as a stronghold of the Congress. In 2010, voters in the town delivered a setback to the Left, which had enjoyed considerable influence in the region, and brought the Nagar Panchayat under Congress control.

However, in the 2018 Assembly elections, many Congress supporters in the town shifted their allegiance to the BJP amid the political change in the state, contributing to the Left's defeat. The BJP subsequently remained in power from 2018 to 2023.

The political equation appeared to undergo another shift during the 2023 Assembly elections, when voters in Sabroom reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the incumbent leadership. The 1,250 NOTA votes recorded in the constituency were seen by political observers as a significant message from sections of the electorate.

With the Nagar Panchayat elections approaching, attention is now focused on the campaign strategies and organisational strength of the competing parties. The extent to which the Congress, BJP and other political forces can mobilise voters will become clearer as the election campaign gathers pace.
