Khowai:: The BJP turned the nomination-filing exercise for the upcoming municipal elections into a show of organisational strength in Khowai on Thursday, with a massive procession, party flags and enthusiastic participation by workers and supporters. Political observers believe the mobilisation also signals the party’s early preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections, even as the immediate focus remains on the civic polls.
The BJP organised a large procession in support of its nominated candidates for all 15 wards of the Khowai Municipal Council. Among those who joined the rally were Pinaki Das Chowdhury, MLA of the Kalyanpur-Pramodnagar Assembly constituency; Khowai BJP district president Samir Kumar Das; Khowai district in-charge Tapas Majumder; Dhalai district co-in-charge Subrata Majumder; and other party leaders, workers and supporters.
The procession passed through various roads in the town before reaching the Returning Officer’s office at Office Tilla, where all 15 BJP candidates filed their nomination papers for their respective wards.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury expressed confidence that the BJP would win all 15 wards. He claimed that the party was receiving widespread public support ahead of the municipal elections and asserted that the political moves of the opposition CPI(M) and Congress would have no impact on the electoral outcome. He further expressed confidence that voters would give the opposition an appropriate response through the ballot and that its candidates could even lose their security deposits.
The BJP candidates are Usha Rani Singha from Ward 1, Chirantan Das from Ward 2, Jharna Deb Biswas from Ward 3, Debashish Nath Sharma from Ward 4, Satyabrata Biswas from Ward 5, Swapna Dutta from Ward 6, Sabitri Nam Das from Ward 7, Pankaj Chowdhury from Ward 8, Kamala Debnath from Ward 9, Urmila Roy from Ward 10, Sagar Deb from Ward 11, Nibas Chandra Saha from Ward 12, Sumita Bhattacharya from Ward 13, Debabrata Sutradhar from Ward 14 and Piyush Kanti Chowdhury from Ward 15.
By fielding candidates in all 15 wards, the BJP has entered the Khowai civic contest with a full slate. The scale of Thursday’s procession and the presence of senior leaders added political significance to the nomination programme. However, whether the ruling party’s show of strength and its claim of sweeping all wards translate into votes remains to be seen. The November 27 municipal election will ultimately determine the verdict of Khowai’s electorate.
