Discontent within the BJP over candidate selection for the Ambassa Municipal Council elections is increasingly coming to the fore, with the party’s Ambassa Mandal Yuva Morcha president, Biswajit Roy, filing his nomination as an independent candidate from Ward No. 10. Sagarika Biswas has also filed her nomination as an independent candidate from Ward No. 6.
Several other BJP leaders, both men and women, have reportedly resigned from their organisational posts in protest against the party’s candidate selection process. Their dissatisfaction is centred on the way candidates were chosen for the civic polls. Questions have also been raised over the party fielding three candidates from the same family in Ambassa, a decision that has reportedly triggered further resentment within the organisation.
In a significant show of dissent, Biswajit Roy arrived at the nomination centre in a procession accompanied by a large number of supporters to file his papers as an independent candidate. His decision to contest against the backdrop of the party’s candidate selection has brought the internal discontent within the BJP’s Ambassa unit into sharper focus.
With the municipal elections approaching, it remains to be seen how the growing resentment over candidate selection will affect the BJP’s electoral prospects in Ambassa.
