Agartala:** Bodhjungnagar police on Saturday produced Baptu Chakraborty before a court following his arrest in a case registered under the Arms Act. He was arrested over allegations of firing at BJP workers. However, police claimed that the pistol recovered from his possession was actually a toy gun, triggering a political controversy in the area.
The incident reportedly took place during a Narayan Seva programme organised by the Congress in Khayerpur to mark the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Allegations emerged that Congress leaders and workers were attacked during the programme. The Congress alleged that its members were assaulted in connection with the event, while BJP workers claimed that shots had been fired at them. The allegations led to demands for action against Baptu Chakraborty.
Chakraborty, however, has claimed that he was deliberately framed in the case. Police have also maintained that the pistol recovered from him was a toy weapon. The conflicting claims surrounding the alleged firing, the recovery of the weapon and its reported nature have raised several questions about the incident.
The actual sequence of events is expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, police have produced Chakraborty before the court in connection with the case registered under the Arms Act.
