Ashish Saha Set to Exit? Sudip Roy Barman Emerges as Frontrunner for Tripura Congress Chief
Speculation over a possible change in the leadership of the Tripura Pradesh Congress has intensified, with the tenure of incumbent president Ashish Kumar Saha nearing its end. Speculation over a possible change in the leadership of the Tripura Pradesh Congress has intensified, with the tenure of incumbent president Ashish Kumar Saha nearing its end. As the party weighs its options for his successor, the name of former state Congress president and MLA Sudip Roy Barman has emerged prominently in internal discussions.
On June 17, 2023, Ashish Kumar Saha was appointed as the Pradesh Congress president, replacing Birajit Sinha. From the outset, political circles had suggested that Sudip Roy Barman played an important role behind the leadership change. Alongside political calculations, the personal friendship between Ashish and Sudip was also believed to have influenced the decision. Now, speculation is growing over whether the same equation could once again shape the choice of the next state Congress chief.
While the Congress has been seeking to regain political momentum at the national level under Rahul Gandhi, the party in Tripura has yet to make a comeback with the strength expected of it. More than three years into Ashish Saha's tenure, questions remain within the organisation over whether its grassroots structure has been strengthened. Dissatisfaction is reportedly being voiced at different levels over the party leadership's efforts to activate the organisation, from booth and block committees to district and state units. The possibility of a change at the top has therefore intensified discussions about the party's future direction.
Initially, the names of MLA Birajit Sinha and MLA Gopal Chandra Roy had also emerged as possible successors to Ashish Saha. Both leaders have previously held senior responsibilities in the Pradesh Congress. Supporters of Birajit Sinha point to the party's comparatively better electoral performance under his leadership in an earlier Assembly election. He is also considered to have longstanding connections with the Congress central leadership. Gopal Chandra Roy, meanwhile, is known for his longstanding links with senior Congress leaders in Delhi. A section within the party believes that neither leader can be overlooked in view of their experience and political connections.
However, the choice of the next president is unlikely to depend on experience alone. The internal balance of power within the state Congress could prove equally decisive. The elevation of either Birajit Sinha or Gopal Chandra Roy could significantly alter the existing power equations and potentially intensify factional differences within the organisation. Political observers believe the central leadership may be reluctant to trigger another round of internal realignment at a time when the party is already facing organisational challenges in the state.
Against this backdrop, Sudip Roy Barman has once again moved to the centre of the discussion. He is currently an invited member of the Congress Working Committee. According to party sources, Ashish Kumar Saha has proposed Sudip's name as his successor. How much weight the outgoing president's recommendation will carry in the final decision remains a matter of speculation. Internal sources also claim that Sudip has conveyed his interest in taking over the state party leadership to the central leadership in Delhi. However, neither Sudip Roy Barman nor the Congress has made any official statement on the matter so far.
Sudip has previously served as the president of the Tripura Pradesh Congress and has considerable experience in organisational management, cadre mobilisation and state politics. His political career has witnessed several significant turns, including his departure from the Congress to join the BJP, his subsequent resignation from the BJP government as a minister, and his return to the Congress. The extent to which the central leadership will rely on his organisational experience and political standing is now a key question.
Sudip's possible return to the state party's top post would represent more than a routine leadership change; it could also reshape the internal power structure of the Tripura Congress. At the same time, the experience and political standing of leaders such as Birajit Sinha and Gopal Chandra Roy are factors the high command will have to consider. Their possible roles in the new arrangement could also influence the balance among different factions within the party.
The political equation that paved the way for Ashish Kumar Saha's appointment in 2023 appears to be resurfacing in 2026, albeit with Sudip Roy Barman now at the centre of the speculation. Whether the Congress high command opts for a transition shaped by personal and political equations or prioritises organisational experience and wider acceptability will ultimately be determined by its decision in Delhi.
